This is a representative example of Helms Bilingual Education clip art / illustrations. These illustrations are carefully crafted to be clear, technically accurate and --I'll admit it-- kind of fun. But don't be fooled by the apparent simplicity: these are proven resources that are clear to students and easy for teachers to teach.
This particular illustration shows the orographic or "rain shadow" effect. Prevailing winds pick up moisture from the surface of the ocean; but, the as the wind pushes the moist air up the mountain the cooler temperatures force the moisture out as precipitation. Eventually, the dry air passes over the mountain and causes deserts on the opposite side of the mountain.
HBE illustrations are NOT labeled. Here's why:
- HBE clients are teachers from all over the world and many prefer to label in their own language.
- Many teachers have preferred language or terms that they use (e.g., orographic vs. rain shadow effect); they do not want to have to replace a label that they do not like.
- Teachers like to use HBE illustrations for quizzes, tests, flashcards, or in-class challenges. Labeling the illustrations would make that more difficult.
HBE is the new guy around here so I'm always interested in your comments and suggestions. I hope to be posting new content regularly so I would love to have you as a follower.
