Your middle school or high school Biology students will love this lab! As they observe osmosis with eggs (and possibly potatoes), they will record their discoveries of how cells behave in hypertonic and hypotonic solutions using a student lab worksheet.
Please note: This lab is also part of my Year of Biology Labs- BIG BUNDLE!
This is a quick and memorable lesson about the concepts of diffusion and osmosis framed in an inquiry-based lab.
This activity is a great conclusion to a discussion or presentation on diffusion and osmosis. Background information is provided for teachers or can also be handed out to students as an additional tool for student review. Full-color detailed pictures add to the explanation of the concepts.
The activity involves students observations of osmosis through the use of de-shelled eggs and potato slices. Eggs without the shells are perfect for demonstrating the movement of water, as it is easily seen in only minutes! Your students will have great fun examining the swollen egg in the hypotonic solution and the shrunken egg in the hypertonic solution. Potato slices are also great tools for this activity and additional questions are posed for these.
