Product Description
For this inquiry lab, students examine an egg under hypotonic and hypertonic conditions and then explain how these conditions affect both the size/mass of the egg and the movement of water. The lab is designed to take place over four days, with an average of 25 minutes per day spent on the lab. It works great as an introduction to the concept of osmosis and adds an element of interactivity to the lesson.

In my classroom, I actually begin this lab just before I discuss cellular transport. Then, I link my lessons on related topics (hypotonic, hypertonic, isotonic, diffusion, etc.) to each day's lab activities.

This lab is a classroom favorite! It encourages students to create hypotheses using prior knowledge, collect both qualitative and quantitative data, analyze their data and compare the results to their hypotheses. Students are fascinated by the removal of the eggshell and the subsequent changes in the egg as it shrinks and expands under different conditions.

The file also includes a PDF form for students to submit a digital copy of the lab.
