Osmosis and Eggs for Middle School
The Osmosis and Eggs lab is a key experience for middle school science classes. This lab enables students to manipulate the concepts of osmosis and diffusion since eggs are large enough to see, and they can make the connection between the egg modeling a real cell. In addition, it lends itself to further exploration after the lab is complete. Students can experiment with other types of liquid as the eggs will swell and shrink for some time after the lab is completed as designed. Additionally, they could extrapolate this learning to other cells, such as red blood cells in either hypotonic or hypertonic solutions.
Additionally, this lab is designed with a Google App lab report using Google Presentation. In this file, you will find a template for students to complete their lab report showing the process of what has occurred in the lab setting. This is key to the lab experience because students can import the image files and create image mark ups of their actual lab experiments. Utilizing pictures that they have obtained during their own lab experiences is key to making this a great learning experience.
