Are you looking for an engaging way to teach your students about ostrich words (VCCCV syllable division pattern)? This resource includes 20 pages of posters and engaging interactive notebook activities to help your students learn to read and spell two-syllable words that follow the VC/CCV and VCC/CV syllable division pattern known as "ostrich words." This pack includes 3 colorful posters to introduce the concept of syllable division patterns and to provide easy-to-follow directions for marking-up and reading words that follow the "ostrich" syllable division pattern of vowel-consonant-consonant-consonant-vowel. This resource also includes blackline versions and student versions for students to color and glue into their interactive notebooks.

This pack includes engaging interactive notebook activities for teaching your students to identify, mark-up, and read ostrich words (VCCCV syllable division pattern) such as word sorts, flapbooks, puzzles, and cut-and-paste activities. This resource aligns to the Common Core state standards and is also designed as a companion activity for structured and systematic reading intervention programs (see program alignment information below). Your students will love the activities in this resource as literacy centers, anchor activities, or for additional home practice! This resource is easy-to-prep and easy for students to use so you have more time to #TEACHHAPPY!

This Resource Includes:

  • 3 Colorful Teacher Posters (Syllables, Ostrich Words Definition, How to Code Ostrich Words)
  • Blackline Masters and Student Posters for Interactive Notebooks
  • Activity 1: Ostrich Words Flapbook
  • Activity 2: Rabbit (VCCV) vs. Ostrich (VCCCV) Flapbook
  • Activity 3: Rabbit vs. Ostrich Word Sort
  • Activity 4: Ostrich Syllable Construction
  • Activity 5: Ostrich Word Cut-up

How I Use this Resource:

  1. Introducing Syllable Division Patterns - I introduce the syllable division pattern of "Ostrich Words" (VCCCV) using the colorful teacher posters and blackline masters for students. There is 1 poster to teach the definition of "syllable" and 2 posters to introduce the VCCCV syllable division pattern.
  2. Multisensory Instruction - Each poster includes visuals that I pair with hand gestures to make the definitions for each syllable division pattern easier to remember. We rehearse these definitions during instruction so that students are better able to apply their knowledge of syllable types when reading and spelling.
  3. Prescriptive Practice - I assign individual students specific interactive notebook activities to complete based on areas of need I've observed during our lessons.
  4. Literacy Center - After I've introduced the "ostrich" (VCCCV) syllable division pattern, I put out additional interactive notebook activities as a choice during literacy centers. There are activities for students to engage in higher order thinking skills such as analyzing and evaluating.
