This is a comprehensive, 12-page packet that guides students through the process of writing a 5-paragraph essay on a character from Othello. (Note: The assignment can be easily modified to use to analyze a character from any other literary work.) The essay focuses on choosing a character, identifying a trait the character possesses, and finding three quotations from the text to support this claim. The packet then walks students through an orderly and sequential process (with examples!) for strong quotation selection, thesis writing, essay structuring/building, style and mechanics considerations, and MLA formatting (an overview of the entire paper and the Works Cited). The packet also includes step-by-step directions (with pictures) for formatting a paper in MLA for both a Microsoft Word document and a Google Doc. There is also a page dedicated to showing students how to embed quotations and use in-text citations. The final two pages of the packet contain a sample essay for students to use as a model. The sample essay is broken down into sections and labeled to guide student learning.
