This Drama Guide is meant to help students record and analyze Shakespeare's Othello. The first three pages are set up as a chart focusing on elements of drama (setting, characters, themes, etc.) The remaining 5 pages are dedicated to plot questions as well as discussion questions. Since this Guide was originally set up for AP Literature, the discussion questions are geared toward the themes of jealousy, manipulation and revenge. I didn't focus this Drama Guide on specific scene and line numbers since my students would be using this work for the Open Ended Question, so it wasn't as important.
Depending on the level of your students, you can walk them through the completion of this Drama Guide. For AP Literature students you can have them complete this on their own time as they read Shakespeare's Othello. For standard level English or honors level English, you can complete the Guide with them as you read the play together.
I used this Guide as a formative assessment to prepare them for their summative assessment of Literary Criticism Research Paper. It was also a great review for students before they went in for their AP Literature test. Instead of rereading the play, they could just review their Drama Guide!
