How is it possible that tiny Malta managed to fend off Suleiman the Magnificent’s Ottoman Empire during the Great Siege of 1565? This lesson explains how by focusing on the contributions that the Knights of Saint John made in protecting the island. As a medieval order formed during the Crusades, their existence was a bit peculiar by the 16th century, and their active role in world affairs was stranger still. How they came to Malta is a tale stretching 800 miles and 100 years, but their relationship with Charles V and the Maltese people resulted resulted in the Ottoman Empire being contained to the eastern Mediterranean Sea, which permanently altered the history of southern Europe.
