Want a memorable way to keep learning all the way to the last day of school? Want your review activities to be worthwhile?

Give students a document they can carry to future grade levels and remember you by!

In this activity, students work together to create a class “glossary” of everything they’ve learned that year. Using a variety of methods to divide and conquer the task, students record in their own words what they have learned and what was important.

This Glossary becomes a valuable document that you can print or share digitally; students can treat it like a study guide before a major assessment, or keep it in their binder for next year’s class to build on what they already know! Teach this formally as a glossary and review text features, OR treat is as more of a class yearbook or memory book.

This 8-page download includes:
• A 2-page Teacher’s Guide that explains how to conduct this projects, ELA writing process standards from the CCSS that apply, and suggestions on how to best get students involved.

• A 6-page, FULLY EDITABLE Template for your class glossary! This includes a Table of Contents cover page, a “This Year” page with spaces for favorites and a Top Ten list, and then 4 pages of suggested sections

• I TRULY believe that this project applies to a wide range of grade levels and subject areas. I use this with my 8th grade ELA class so they can take information with them to high school. I also used it with high school juniors during student teaching as preparation for an AP test; I do this more informally with my ACT students before our time together is done. Students as young as 5th and 6th grade could easily be asked to reflect on their year and compile their learning.
• Although I made this product with ELA in mind, this editable template CAN be used for other content areas. Simply swap out the labels like “Reading” with section headers for science, social studies, math, and more! This is ESPECIALLY true for content area teachers who want to accomplish CCSS Literacy standards for writing, OR who want a great review tool before a specific test.
