This packet serves as an investigatory lesson of the question "is the pen mightier than the sword?" In other words, This lesson walks students through a three part assignment: identifying a concern in their immediate community, thinking about the global implications of their chosen issue, and ultimately proposing solutions. This packet walks your learners through a multiple draft process (including self, peer, and teacher editing) of writing a cohesive three part essay.
Note on Pre-Activity: In the introduction of this packet, Malala is referenced. As stated above, this project centers around the idea that the pen is mightier than the sword. Introduce this lesson by watching Malala's interview on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-october-8-2013/exclusive---malala-yousafzai-extended-interview-pt--1. Invite your students to explore the rivaling forces of the pen (Malala's fight for women's education) and the sword (the Taliban's terrorism). This conversation leads us to the distribution of the packet, where your learners will embark on their own journey to speak up for what they believe is right.
