My Junior English class reads Our Town which may seem like a break from the regular, but Our Town is all about normal American life which goes along with the big idea of the American Dream for American English.
The three acts display the three important parts of life: a day in the life, love and marriage, and death. These discussion questions are a variety of questions asking about the author’s choices, specific quotes, the characters, and bigger meaning.
I put students into groups of three or four and have them discuss the questions, write answers, and write two of their own questions (each group can have the same questions.). We then get together as a whole group to discuss the answers. I let a volunteer reads the questions so that I’m not the leader of the discussion. I mainly just keep up with who talks since they also get a grade for contributing to the discussion. A rubric is included on each paper to score each student individually. There are eight questions for each act with a place for the students to come up with two questions in their groups.
