This is a great activity for students who have just finished reading Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper. Students first brainstorm a list of all the everyday tasks that Melody struggles with. Then, they brainstorm ideas for an invention that might help Melody in her day-to-day life. They discuss possible names for the invention, the cost of the invention, and the tasks the invention can carry out.
The final project is to draw a detailed, labeled, and colored diagram of their invention idea. The invention must be able to help Melody with her daily struggles in some way.
