Product Description

Students can use these templates for writing practice any time they are not in school for an extended period of time, such as holidays, Spring Break, summer vacation, or if your school is unexpectedly closed for an emergency.

3/26/20 Update: The templates now have more space in them for writing/typing responses.

This resource is free until the end of the U.S. school year to help educators affected by school closings due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

You can use this resource remotely in 2 ways:

a) Tell students to use the Google Drive version.

b) Send/email photocopies of whichever template you want students to use and the pages with writing and math tasks home or tell students to print them out themselves if they have access to a printer. Tell students to write answers to the questions on the template and fill in the info in the reading section. Tell students to do the writing and math tasks if you want them to do them. Have students send/email their work back to you so you can look it over.

There are 8 templates in all, 4 that are labeled for the seasons, 1 for a mid-winter break, 1 for an unexpected school closing, a template that can be used for any holiday, and a generic template that can be used for any occasion. Each template consists of two parts: a star and a rectangle. In the star section, students write key words or a sentence about science and math activities they do and social studies observations they make during their break. They also write about how they help at home and what they read, and they write a general description of what they have done on their holiday. In the rectangle section, students list what they read during their break. There are 3 versions of each template: 1 that has lines in the center of the star, 1 without lines, and an online version using Google Slides.

Give your students even more writing practice by having them use the information in their logs to write paragraphs or compositions either while they’re at home or after their return to school. An organizer is included in this resource to help students do that. Pages for writing a first draft and a final copy are provided and each of those pages comes in lined and unlined styles. The organizer can also be used as a discussion aid -- students can talk with each other about how they spent their vacations in pairs or small groups, . In addition, there is information for doing a math task based on what students read during their break. Templates for a bar or line graph and for a pie chart are provided if you would like your students to do that.

These templates are suitable for all students! English Language Learners at beginning proficiency levels can draw pictures or write single words while other students can write phrases or sentences. Save your students' work in portfolios and at the end of the school year, they can review their responses and write about the kinds of observations they anticipate they will make during their summer vacation.

This resource is a quick and simple way for students to record what they read and it gives them some writing practice when they are out of school for more than just 1 or 2 days.
