This is a listing of phrases taken from Karen Hesse's Out of the Dust. The page number is listed in parenthesis. The idea is to have the students form into groups of three or four. They are then given a plastic container with dirt. They plant their grass seeds. The teacher gets the seeds to grow. Students pretend the seeds are whatever crop they'd like it to be. After the "crop" is grown, these slips of weather are cut out individually and placed in a hat. A member from each group selects a slip, and the teacher recreates this weather on to their crop. Contact me for ideas as to how to do this. After the weather happens, students reflect about the experience, as their "farmer" in their rough draft entry for their Dust Journal.
