Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse is a historical fiction novel written in free-verse poetry. In this literature unit, students see how Billie Jo's character grows and changes as she and her family struggle through hardships living in the Dust Bowl during the Great Depression.
This unit also includes activities based on the book What Was the Great Depression? by Janet B. Pascal. Studying the historical time period alongside Out of the Dust brings both the history and the literature to life.
Literature Connections units are written to the student and can be used for summer reading, independent study, homeschooling, or easily adapted to be teacher-directed for classroom use.
