After reading a portion of the novel Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse, students identify the symbolism in selected poems by taking a "Symbolism Stroll" around the room. At each poem title hung around the room, students find and read that poem in their novel. On a chart, they identify and explain symbols in that poem. The also find text evidence that supports that symbolism from the novel. There is no answer key, as there are multiple symbols and text evidence that supports that symbolism in the poems. If you've read the novel and understand symbolism, it's very easy to figure out. It's also interesting to see the students' different interpretations of symbols in each poem and makes for great in class discussion. This activity is aligned with the standards of the Common Core Curriculum and includes a brief PowerPoint presentation, the poem titles with page numbers to hang around the room, and the chart for students to fill in.
