To help my students learn to expand their sentences both verbally and in writing, we start by using a graphic organizer called “out of this world sentences.” We start by making a list of “out of this world” creatures. After we have finished making our list of creatures, each child chooses one of their “creatures” then describes the creature in the “describe” section of the graphic organizer. They could choose words such as: small, huge, scary, beautiful, etc. Your students will continue to fill in the graphic organizer moving across the page, until all sections are completed. Encourage you students to make more than one sentence per graphic organizer. For older students you can have them write a quick short story about their creature they created using the graphic organizer. After filling in the graphic organizer I have them write their sentences or stories on the space page. Hope you and your students enjoy this as much as mine do.
