Engage your Biology students with this activity that casts them as CDC scientists researching the best way to stop the spread of a deadly disease. Student groups will get to select from four different viruses in one of two locations in the world. Each group will then research specific information - as laid out in the instructions - and create a website to inform the public about the growing epidemic. Phase two of the project asks students to develop a strategic plan for curing or, at the very least, preventing the further spread of the disease. This project incorporates research, analysis, synthesis and creativity. You can use it as I have it set up or select your own diseases and locations. This document contains 8 letters that can be provided to your students to lay out the disease outbreak in their specific location. On "official" CDC letterhead, these documents add to the relevance of the project, addressing your students as scientific researchers. Also included is a form for students to sign up for their virus.
