Outcasts, Outsiders, Adolescence, and “Fitting In”
Literature Circle Unit
Designed for seventh through ninth grade students, this unit includes a permission slip, sectioned reading assignments, student roles for during reading, quiz questions with answers, and performance tasks based on individual essential questions.
The five books in this unit are:
"Freak the Mighty" by Rodman Philbrick
"Stargirl" by Jerry Spinelli
"The Chocolate War" by Robert Cormier
"We Beat the Street" by Dr. Samson, et al. (this is a non-fiction text)
"Whale Talk" by Chris Crutcher
The five texts range from low seventh grade reading level to high ninth grade reading level, which is perfect for differentiation. Summaries included will help you determine which students are prepared for which texts ("Whale Talk" and "The Chocolate War" are not for immature students!). All quiz questions and answers are kid-tested and teacher-written.
Performance tasks are in the format of a five-paragraph essay, with an accompanying rubric. Each task is specific to its novel (they each have a specific essential question), but it is the same essay and rubric.
