When your students get spring or summer fever, take them outside for some meaningful outdoor learning! This resource is perfect for that. It contains 18 writing prompts that were specifically designed for outdoor writing.
NOTE: This resource now has a Google Slides™ version, making it ideal for digital distance learning and remote teaching! Please see the 3rd page of the PDF for details and the links. Note: A few of the prompts do reference a playground area but the majority (75% or more) can be used in any outdoor setting.
This resource includes narrative writing, persuasive/opinion writing, informational writing, poetry, and more!
The narrative, persuasive/opinion, and informational writing prompts are available in three formats to fit your needs.
1.) The first format has the prompt and a planning organizer on the page. Use this format if you want your students to plan their writing prior to writing. The planning can be completed outside, and then the actual writing can be done inside.
2) The second format has the prompt and then a lined space. The lined space can be used for planning or drafting the story.
3.) The third format has the same prompt on one page, multiple times. You can use this format if you want the students to use their writing notebooks. They could cut and glue the prompt into their notebook prior to going outside.
I have also included a few publishing pages if you wish to have your students publish some of their writings. If your students do publish their stories, I recommend taking pictures while they are writing outside. Then you can make a nice bulletin board of their published stories and pictures of them writing.
This outdoor writing prompt set now includes a digital version using Google Slides.
