I teach in a Growth Mindset positive classroom. This means that finding resources like behavior charts are quite difficult. Add to that the fact that I change my charts out monthly and it is nearly impossible. I am in the process of developing clip charts that celebrate a growth mindset in the classroom but are also fun.
What exactly is a Growth Mindset Positive behavior clip chart?
Students who have a growth mindset learn that effort and attitude are what makes them successful. As a teacher who instills a growth mindset in her students I don’t praise the student, I praise the effort. My students understand that making a mistake is part of learning. This is true with behavior as well. A traditional clip chart has consequences if you move your clip down. A growth mindset clip chart teaches strategies to help students get back on track. Most clip charts have 2 clips down and 2 clips (or 3) clips up. A growth mindset clip chart has 3 clips down and 7 clips up. This allows me to praise the student’s efforts all day long.
Hold on! That is 11 spots on a clip chart.
Yes, my charts really do have 11 clip spots. This makes for a large clip chart. For this reason, I post my clip charts horizontal instead of vertical. This may not work for you so, I have included an editable version, so you can choose which pictures and colors you want to use. You can edit the text to fit your teaching style.
Does a growth mindset clip chart work better than a fixed mindset clip chart?
The answer to this question depends on the teacher. I have created a positive culture around my classroom behavior management plan. Students are excited when they have earned a chance to clip up. When they reach the top, they bring their clip to me and clip it on my lanyard. The students get excited as more and more clips end up on me. They call it Mrs. C’s good day necklace. I create excitement by changing my chart out monthly and allowing students to earn new clips (Foam stickers and a regular clothespin.) After the 2nd week of school, we rarely miss learning time because of behavior issues. When we do that’s ok because we get to make a strategy to do better.
