Outlining is a form of note-taking for non-fiction text. It is not a substitute for SQ3R active reading strategy. It is a post-reading (after reading) strategy because it requires the student to think about and become more familiar with the topic. First the student should read the assigned non-fiction text using active reading SQ3R strategies. Then return to outline the information.
