Engage students with real-life examples of overharvesting from around the world!
Covers NGSS MS-LS2-1 and MS-LS2-4.
In this ecosystems and ecology activity, middle school students read 6 real news stories about specific examples of overharvested resources, and gather information in a simple graphic organizer worksheet. Each of the 6 examples of overharvesting is a quick informational reading between 1-2 pages long each, with color pictures (but it can certainly be printed in black and white).
As they read the information, students complete a graphic organizer (provided) with information about how overharvesting has affected each species.
To save copies (and your time!), make just a few copies of each reading, and have students rotate through one reading at a time and return it to the pile when completed. (You can also save the readings year-to-year to save time and copies next year.)
