Do you need a thorough overview of the battle, campaigns, and figures of the Civil War between 1861 and 1862?
We've got just what you need!
This "Overview: The Early Years of the Civil War (1861-1862)" Activity includes:
1) A set of overview questions that will guide your students through the major battles, campaigns, and figures of the Civil War between 1861 and 1862. It also features a map of the Northern and Southern states and asks your students to color the states of the Union and the Confederacy and identify the location of 5 major battles on the map provided. This gives students an opportunity to evaluate the geographic significance of the battles of 1861 and 1862 and why they were fought in their specific location. The activity concludes with a brief primary source writing exercise. Your students are provided with several first-hand accounts of the Battle of Bull Run from the diaries of Union soldiers and the articles of local newspapers from both before and after the battle. Students will compare these documents and gauge how the battle changed the mindset of the average Union soldier in regards to the war. Students will then use what they've discovered to pretend they are a Union soldier after the Battle of Bull Run and write a letter home to describe the battle and how their feelings towards the war might have changed. This is perfect for your students to review content before moving on to a new objective or in preparation for a summative assessment. You can give this to your students as a study guide before the exam to freshen up on the content, or you could even work on it together as a class and use it as a multi-day collaborative lesson with opportunities to share work. However you use it, it will work for you.
