This is a wonderful way to get your students to talk about their thinking! Number talks is a quick way to get your students are talking, and thinking about, numbers and number patterns every day. After using the ten-frames for awhile, you may start hearing your students applying what you’ve been teaching in math, such as addition and subtraction. In my experience, the students get so excited to share how they see the owls on the ten-frames!
These owl themed number talks follow the ten-frame progression from Number Talks: Whole Number Computation, Grades K-5 by Sherry Parrish. Each ten-frame is labeled for the progression (1A, 1B, 1C, etc). The colors of the backgrounds alternate between pink, blue, and green, however, they change subtly when the number for the number talk changes. As each ten-frame is shown, ask, “How many owls do you see, and how do you see them?”
