Students will dissect the owl pellet and identify the animal. They will research a type of plant that animal eats. Students can use this form to create a food chain for their Barn Owl. It gives them a space for an illustration as well as identify the organism. Organisms are identified as producer, primary consumer and secondary consumer. This is a great tool to introduce the food chain as well as solidify terms learned previously in the unit applied to the owl pellet.
If students discover a carnivore in their owl pellet like a mole or shrew, a second food chain is available making the barn owl the tertiary consumer. Students would then research what their consumer eats and then what they eat so it is an accurate food chain.
