IOwl Research Project "Release Your Owl" - Students Become Animal Rehab Experts
In this research activity, your students become animal rehabilitation experts as they learn about an owl and make decisions about its future habitat. The unit contains 7 student pages. I try to encourage my students to pretend that they are real wildlife rehabilitation experts. I stress the importance of releasing wild animals in an habitat that is well-suited for their survival.
My students use the internet to find information about their owl, but you may wish to use reference materials from your school or community library. Aside from doing research about owls and answering relevant questions, students will:
1) Create a picture of their owl. You may wish to have your students label parts of the owl’s body. This can lead to a discussion about animal adaptations.
2) Draw a picture which shows their owl’s natural habitat. This works well with my science lessons about ecosystems, habitats, and how animals are adapted to survive in their natural environment.
3) Create a map showing where their owl will be released. This part of the lesson ties in geography and an understanding of maps. Students may wish to draw a state map, a U.S. map, or an area in your community.
4) Write a news article about the release of their owl. They explain why they chose the area where it will be released.
Let me know if you have questions about this unit. Happy owling!
