This is a great activity to help young children understand how subtraction woks.
First the student(s) draw a card from the pile. Then they count out how many owl's they need and place them on the tree (velcro or magnets are best). Then they read the subtraction question and take away the right amount of owls. They then count how many owl's are left and can write the answer with dry erase marker on the cards or on one of the 2 worksheets provided.
One worksheet has an example to help model for the students.
When first using this, I suggest using only the subtract from 5 cards, they put back every owl with them until they understand how it works. This activity does require some modeling but that is easily done in a small group setting.
