Owls in the Family is an introduction on how to complete a novel study unit. With Owls as such a hot classroom theme, this book written Farley Mowat is a great way to introduce students to novel studies. I read this book to the class a chapter at a time and students are asked to answer questions involving making connections, predictions, asking questions, inferencing, compare and contrasting and visualizing.
At the end of two chapters, a rubric is provided for students to self-reflect on their work. Did their sentences start with capitals and end with periods? Did they write in complete sentences? Did they use spelling tools like our word wall and word lists?
By the end of the unit, when setting up guided reading groups, students will have a clear expectation of what you expect and you will have an easy assessment tool to show parents about students writing.
