The Oxford comma is at the center of what is possibly the most significant grammar debate in existence. This tiny little punctuation mark really can make the difference between winning and losing court cases worth thousands of dollars...talk about a real-world impact! It's important to educate our students about this debate as well as why using the Oxford comma is always the safest course of action.
This Oxford comma minilesson contains ideas for introduction to the concept: links to two videos and a news article are included. Also, the exercise includes a brief explanation of the debate and the Oxford comma as well as five practice questions to get students thinking critically about whether or not to use it.
If you like this lesson, don't miss the Pesky Punctuation lesson available in my store; it covers eight important comma rules and the main semicolon use. It's great for test prep or review.
