This is a unit that includes three non-fiction texts, practice PARCC or Smarter Balanced multiple choice questions for each, including a matching question similar to the drag-and-drop questions on the PARCC. It also includes an essay prompt and a graphic organizer to help students organize their essay response.
We used this unit over the course of a week, spending one day on each text and two days on the essay. This unit was developed by a team of four teachers and has been student-tested! The topic paired well with some of the typical freshmen literature; for instance, we taught this unit shortly after reading "Cask of Amontillado" and we connected some of our discussion to whether murder was a valid form of revenge.
