RIDDLE ME THIS PARCC.....
This thematic unit is constructed around the expectations of 4-6 common core English Language Arts PARCC expectations. Students are led through a series of engaging mini lessons based around high interest picture book texts that help them learn to decode PARCC style questions by becoming THE RIDDLER. The mini lessons are based around 5 picture books that also include embedded video links to the books being read aloud. The books are Stand Tall Molly Lou Mellon, The Secret Short Cut, A Bad Case of the Stripes, Paper Bag Princess, and Thank You Mr. Falker. The questions are all created using the Webbs Depth of Knowledge wheel and are in PARCC style formating and require students to create a claim, find evidence and use their own reasoning when answering each question. A claims, evidence & reasoning graphic organizer is included along with a grading rubric that is student friendly. Questions are broken down in a fun format using The Riddler from Batman. I have used this unit in my classroom and field tested in other classrooms. It has proven to be highly effective in helping students understand what questions what them to do, how to answer them, and to increase the depth in which students construct answers. Sample student answers are included in power point, question breakdown, and teacher notes throughout the slide show. It is a 59 slide power point that is able to be edited by teacher, used on a smart board, or uploaded into student devices. The graphic organizer is in word format so it is also able to be edited and uploaded if needed. THE PREVIEW SLIDES TO NOT SHOW ALL THE GRAPHICS INCLUDED IN THE WHOLE POWER POINT.
