The upcoming PARCC assessment will ask the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students to produce types of writing from this list. This product is designed in a flash-card type style. There are 36 types of writing listed individually on cards (autobiography, letter, magazine article, etc.). There are also 36 cards with a description of each type of writing. Your students need to be familiar with each one and know how to create an example of it if asked. Of course you have taught how to write each and every one of them....right? However, your students (if like mine) could use a way to "brush up" on these skills.
You can use the cards as a matching activity, discussion in small groups, independent center work, or to lead a lesson on what to write about.
I found it to be helpful to "focus" on five types for one week, then add five more to them the next week until the entire list is mastered.
THIS IS NOT A PLAN ON HOW TO WRITE FOR PARCC!
However, this will prepare your student to know what is expected of them when they see a prompt that asks them to produce a "narrative" or a "character sketch". They will at least be able to identify what is being asked of them and create a plan from there.
Thank you for looking at this product! Good luck on the PARCC assessment!
This product is in a zipped file because I have included 2 copies of the product: one in word, and one PDF.
