I cobbled together a variety of resources to marry up to the PARCC research simulation writing prompt. Students will read an article about an Indiana district that yanked the novel out of students' hands (it was published while I was teaching the book - kids carried a 60-minute conversation on the article), watch a video of Toni Morrison being interviewed by Bill Moyers and then use their understanding of the text as a whole (AP Lit phrasing is intentional). You could also give them an excerpt of the novel to make it more PARCC-esque, but I prefer melding the AP and PARCC into a more authentic response. I've also added an argumentative rubric that is completely grounded in the Common Core (here's a link to an article about the creation of said rubric:http://www.njpsa.org/documents/pdf/EdViewptsSpring2013.pdf). You could assign this as a take home or a rigorous in-class exercise. I'm planning to post all my Song of Solomon reading quizzes once I figure out how to post unit plans. Thanks for taking a look!
