The PBL unit titled ‘What Shall I Do with the Meadow’ is an original problem based learning unit that I wrote when I took the PBL class at the College of William and Mary in the 90’s. It deals with Eminent Domain and displacing the people in Appalachia to build the Skyline Drive. I build prior knowledge through the use of materials included in the resource folder.
I present the problem that Louise must solve with a telegram from a lawyer that states granny died and left the meadow to her. Louise has fond memories of her childhood growing up amidst such national beauty and of the local people who encouraged her to follow her dreams which led her to a different part of the country thirty years ago.
There are several entities vying for the land; the indigenous people, the park service, earth first, a condominium builder, and city planner. Louise needs advice from a committee of people and a presentation to present to the city council. What are the values that will influence this decision? What does she need to know about the arguments of the people that are pressuring her to decide their way?
The students in the classroom form the committees, which will read the evidence that is introduced each week.
