PDL's Barnyard Equivalent Fraction Race Game for Cuisenaire® Rods has two fraction activities that allow student to gain fluency in equivalent fractions. These activities are a platform for students to discover equivalent fractions. These activities are great in large groups, small groups or individually.
The first activity is a racing game designed to be used with Cuisenaire® Rods. During the racing game, the rules provide the student opportunity to observe when certain fractions are equivalent to others. The game provides many opportunities for discovery and should be played many times before moving onto the next activity.
The second activity allows the student to use what he/she has discovered about equivalency and apply that understanding. Successful discovery of fraction equivalency in the first activity will provide for success in the second activity. If the student struggles to provide the correct amount of hay to the right animal, have the child return to the first activity.
The pedagogy that pairs well with these activities was promoted by Caleb Gattegno. It is the idea that teaching is subordinate to learning. Basically, allow the child to play with the activity and discover the ideas represented within the activity. Stretch the student by having them describe orally what they see and once fluency is gained orally, move to written observations. Acknowledge all their observations, and try to gain an understanding of what they observe that you might provide more opportunities for them to discover math ideas on their own. Refrain from trying to "teach" them. Instead, all them through their observations to discover the idea.
Note: These activities are in full color. The activities are not designed for one time use and so it is worth printing in color. If the student fills up their discover page with discoveries, print out a new one so they can continue to add to their discoveries.
This is a great activity to add to your interactive math notebooks so that the student can return to them often for practice and review. *IMPORTANT PRINTING NOTE* Some PDF software default the file to fit page. This changes the size of the activity so when you print, the cuisenaire rods will not fit within the desired area. Please change your settings so that they do not change the size of the page. This setting varies on your software. For Adobe, change the settings to NONE. For others, the setting should be changed to "use actual PDF dimensions for paper size."
