PERILOUS PLASTIC MINI-UNIT: For students in grades 6-10.

This mini-unit aims to give students an understanding of the impact of plastic waste on our oceans and marine environments. It covers plastics, microplastics, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and Midway Island.
The mini-unit contains three major activities:
-Fate of the albatross: students are asked to predict what happened to an albatross found dead on Midway Island. They are presented with an image as their stimulus material and accompanying worksheet.
-The story of three bottles: students watch a YouTube clip that outlines how a plastic bottle is made and three possible end points for the bottle. They then complete a worksheet with a series of questions based on this clip.
-Perilous plastic comprehension activity: students complete comprehension questions based on plastics in our oceans, microplastics, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and Midway Island. This activity also includes a speech writing component.
-14 slide PowerPoint (complete with embedded teaching notes, links to YouTube, images and student direction)
-3 x worksheets
-1 x set of signs to support classroom estimating activity (this activity is embedded into the PowerPoint)
-Comprehensive teaching guide
This mini-unit is designed to take 4-5 lessons/one week of class time. A lesson is assumed to be 50 minutes long.
