This is a close reading activity which can be used with any novel or story. Students choose a passage, discuss it with their group, and share their interpretations with the class. I have included standards, instructions, and an easy-to-use rubric. The first page is for the teacher; the second and third pages should be projected for the students.
Reasons for Using This Activity: Students like it. It is a useful but simple lesson for a substitute teacher. It is an essay way for students to learn how to use textual evidence in seminars and in writing.
