Although the children were not required to have proficient reading skills, some word/letter recognition was needed to complete the task. Second, the 6- and 7-year mark represents the functioning level of many AAC users in the early stages of high-tech AAC device use. Third, this was an exploratory study that adapted the methods of previous learning studies that examined the effects of different AAC device layouts on children aged 2 to 5 years (Drager et al., 2003; Drager et al., 2004; Light et al., 2004). According to those studies, 4- and 5-year-olds achieved only 26% and 37% accuracy, respectively, in learning the taxonomic grid organization.

Additionally, results from a study conducted by Fallon, Light, and Achenbach (2003) indicated that 4- and 5-year-olds organized symbols in pairs rather than large groups or pages, as is typical in a taxonomic grid layout.
