Each set has nine SWITCH cards and nine TAKE TWO cards. I have used a Halloween theme.
This game develops phonemic awareness. As you can see in the PREVIEW, the vowel sounds are in red. Players play by matching the vowel sounds with a word card in their hand, saying the word as they play their card. This is a critical aspect of playing as it reinforces the vowel sound within the word. If the player cannot match they can play a SWITCH card and change the phonemic element. The TAKE TWO cards add lots of fun to the game.
I find my students with dyslexia love this game and want to play it over and over. You will see improvements when you add the game to an intervention session and embed it in spelling skill development. I have different sets so you can target your intervention needs and you can mix and match (or even combine) the sets. One set of 54 cards takes less than five minutes and it is a quick and fun way to start or end an intervention session. This is what I usually do and I sandwich the intensive explicit teaching in between.
I have deliberately bundled this game because I mix and match and that way I target the specific phonic element my kids need. Because my work these days is exclusively intervention most of my kids are making up skill deficits, so the more I can target exactly what they need, the quicker they will catch up to their peers.
It works well for me AND I know it will work for you if the DIRECTIONS are followed. For phonemic awareness to develop through this game each player must say the word on the card they are playing. You can see them memorising sounds, sequencing and blending sounds as they play a card. No wonder I love it!
Once some of your kids know how to play add the game to a Literacy Centre and let your intervention group show the others how to play. It's great for inclusiveness used this way.

SORT IT CARDS: These cards have pictures with the matching word and they are designed for students who need lots of scaffolding. I use boxes to 'post' the cards according to the vowel sound, so the game targets auditory discrimination of vowel sounds. Just the thing when your kids are developing phonemic awareness.
DONKEY: These cards have no match between the word and the picture on the card (like Switcheroo). The player must decode the word. This game is lots of fun but does not have the same level of strategising as Switcheroo. Perfect for younger kids.
