EXCERPT:
GUERNICA is Picasso’s most famous painting. It is also a famous antiwar statement. The actual war going on was the Spanish Civil War, 1936 – 1939, which resulted in Franco’s assuming dictatorial control over Spain for decades following. The specific event in the painting is the 1937 bombing of the Basque city of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. Its use of black, white and grey evokes news photography. This is Picasso’s overall masterpiece. Picasso’s "Weeping Woman" series of paintings comes from the woman screaming, while carrying her dead child, at the extreme left in this painting.

The "Weeping Woman" series is also referred to as the "Postscripts to Guernica." Picasso's longtime lover, Dora Maar, a Surrealist photographer, was the model for all of them. Picasso said of Dora Maar: “For me she's the weeping woman. For years I've painted her in tortured forms, not through sadism, and not with pleasure, either; just obeying a vision that forced itself on me. It was the deep reality, not the superficial one... Dora, for me, was always a weeping woman. And it's important, because women are suffering machines.”
