These task cards have been designed as a way to supplement your Number Talks routine with pictures. This particular set of cards focuses on the introduction of multiplication and division and is based on the task cards "Picture Number Talks: Introducing Multiplication and Division"
The pictures are designed/organized in a way that allows students to visualize number relationships. Each task card has a set of 4-6 groups, which should be introduced to the students one grouping at a time. Each grouping is built on the preceding arrangements so that students can then build on the knowledge they are constructing as they talk about the groupings they see. The cards can be used over
several days as student build on their own thinking as well as the thinking of their peers.
The task cards are intended for students’ understanding of multiplication and division. Students can be introduced to multiplication and division through the groups they see. This will allow them to come to an understanding of how these equal groups and arrays are related, and how they are critical for an understanding of
multiplication and division.
The task cards include various pictures organized in a way that allows students to build on their own prior knowledge. They encourage students to focus on various strategies, including but not limited to counting strategies, doubling, combining equal groups and organizing arrays.
