PIN & Positive, Negative, Neutral Charts | Usage & Idea Guide

  • These two charts are useful when discussing the finer points of debatable topics or when planning for persuasive projects.
  • Any of these questions can be enriched by requiring students to answer, “Why?” or “Where did you find that information?”
  • This document would be well-used in "flipped classrooms." Students can listen to/watch a podcast, lesson, or video outside of class and come back to class to discuss and respond using this sheet as a guide and structure.
  • Also consider using this graphic organizer as a  whole/small group.
  • Pre-complete certain sections of this sheet to aid students who may benefit from this accommodation.
  • Use as part of your assessment cycle of pretesting, checking for understanding, and/or posttesting.
  • Consider enlarging at a local printing company or education agency to use as an anchor chart or large group teaching tool.
  • Enlarge on an Elmo, overhead projector, or interactive whiteboard for whole group instruction and discussion.
  • This sheet works well for all subject areas.
  • Use as part of carousel brainstorming.
  • Assign specific students or specific groups particular columns, boxes, or rows and then share those with other students or groups.
  • Cut apart the document on the lines and use as a game board/puzzle for review purposes. Photographs can be made of these for record keeping and sharing purposes. This can also be sent home as a review, communication, and sharing tool.
  • Print on cardstock and laminate. This allows the document to be used repeatedly by writing on it with dry erase or wet erase markers. Photographs or photocopies can be made of these for record keeping and sharing purposes.
  • Use as part of interactive notebooks. Print size may need to be adjusted depending on the size of notebooks being used.
  • Allow students to answer each questions in a different color of ink or pencil to increase engagement, interest, and potential retention of material. I believe color increases learning.
  • Print multiple copies of this sheet and comb-bind, spiral-bind, or place in a three-ring binder and use it as a study and reference tool.
  • Ways to differentiate this document include allowing the use of a scribe, allowing oral completion, have someone complete portions of this sheet prior to student use, assign different numbers of boxes to complete, assign specific boxes to complete, allow students to work with peer(s), assign different numbers of tidbits, assign different numbers of summary sentences, allow the use of additional pages for more fluent writers, use of colored pens, chunking the assignment over a period of time, adjust due dates and completion times, and completing this sheet as a whole group.
