Hence the unit has a perfect blend of interactive notebook activities, task cards and interesting games. Also included is an end of unit 3-page test to assess taught content.

WHO

The interactives are especially great for the academically challenged as they break down complex material into learnable chunks. The task cards perhaps provide a break from the monotony and cater to the high achievers who want something more challenging and needless to say, the games are what everyone enjoys.

WHAT

As educators, we certainly know, that to present a truly complex concept, one needs to break it down into more digestible components and in keeping with this analogy, this unit on fractions offers a delectable spread of fun fraction interactives that break down and greatly simplify the teaching of fractions. Other than interactive notebook activity sheets, you will also find a fraction game to break the monotony and a 20 questions Fraction test to assess taught content.

WHO

Experience shows that teaching fractions has always been unconsciously challenging, hence the interactives are especially great for the academically challenged as they break down complex material into learnable chunks.

SUGGESTED USE

I start off by introducing the topic through a starter activity prior to general instruction and follow up with the interactive activity sheet. The left side of the interactive notebook incorporates students’ reflective thinking on the lesson instruction and interactive template pasted on the right side of the notebook. Students’ reflections generally comprise of the learning goal, what they know, what they have learned and example of evidence.

SUCCESS RATE

Students love the interactive notebook sheets. I have seen great improvement in terms of attitude and performance in the most reluctant - wish we were taught in a similar fashion back in the good old days :).

1. FRACTION VOCABULARY: 4x 5 flaps template to record mathematical terminology and definitions used when working with fractions.

2. Single tab COMMON CORE STATEMENTS to be pasted (left tab stacked) in notebook.

3. BULLETIN BOARD DISPLAY: 10 word cards and 10 definition cards that can be arranged on a bulletin board to provide a visual display of key mathematical terminology when working with fractions.

4. FRACTIONS OF A SHAPE: 2 x 8 flap foldables to identify fractions of the shaded areas; single sheet activity to color the given fraction amounts.

5. FRACTIONS OF A GROUP: 1 x 8 flap template to identify fractions of given arrays and provide a visual representation.

6. COMPARING FRACTIONS: 1 x 8 flap template to identify the larger fractions using a fraction wall; 4 x 3 flap templates(single page) to compare fractions using the correct sign (< > or =).

7. ORDERING FRACTIONS (DESCENDING ORDER): 4 vertical accordion-style templates to order given fractions from greatest to least. Students can refer to the included fraction wall.

8. ORDERING FRACTIONS (ASCENDING ORDER): 6 horizontal accordion-style flaps to order given fractions from least to greatest using the fraction wall.

9. TYPES OF FRACTIONS (EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS): 3 foldable templates (single page)to show equivalent fractions of thirds, sixths and twelfths; 3 flap problem solving template; 2 x 10 flaps template to match the visual representation of fractions that are equivalent; 1 x 10 flaps template to find the equivalent fractions by multiplying and dividing the numerator and the denominator by the same number.

10. TYPES OF FRACTIONS (MIXED NUMBERS): 1 x 8 flaps foldable to represent the shaded sets of shapes as mixed numbers; 1 x 8 flaps template to write a mixed number for each picture representation; 1 x 8 flaps foldable to represent mixed numbers through diagrams.

11. TYPES OF FRACTIONS (MIXED NUMBERS AND IMPROPER FRACTIONS): 2 x 6 flaps to represent shaded sets of shapes as mixed numbers and improper fractions; 1 x 6 flaps template to provide visual representations of improper fractions and write them as mixed numbers.

12. SIMPLEST FORM (LOWEST TERMS) OF FRACTIONS: 1 x 10 flaps template to simplify given fractions. Students show working out on the outside of the flap and write the fraction in its lowest term on the inside of the flap.

13. ADDING AND SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS WITH LIKE DENOMINATORS: 2 x 10 flaps visual templates to enable students to color in the given sets of shapes to show addition and subtraction of fractions.

14. SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS FROM A WHOLE: 1 x 10 flaps template to subtract fractions from a whole by renaming the whole to make it simpler. Students color in the given sets of shapes to show the remaining fraction.

15. PROBLEM SOLVING: 2 x 8 flaps template featuring problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions; 1 x 2 flaps template featuring two problems and its sub-components.

16. FRACTIONS ON A NUMBER LINE: 1 x 6 vertical accordion style flaps to mark fractions with denominators 2,3,4, 6 and 12 on number lines.

17. EQUIVALENT FRACTION GAME: 20 cards to play a game of Equivalent Fraction Snap.

18. FRACTIONS TEST: 20 questions to assess skills acquired in this unit on fractions. Answer sheets to all questions included.
