This 111-page resource includes the student handouts and collaborative group work activities I created for my class to use during our 2-week unit of inquiry into number and operations concepts in base 10, including teacher notes on how I utilized the resources.

For the unit of inquiry, our students were learning about place value and how numbers could be represented in many different ways. We tied it into art by having students look for math concepts in paintings, images and in their surroundings.

At first, my students were confused when asked to make connections to math through art. Not surprisingly, they quickly rose to the challenge and came up with some out of the box thinking and responses. For the next several weeks, I couldn't stop them from making math connections to art and their surroundings.

The Common Core State Standards this unit touched upon were: using place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic and generalizing place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers.
