This is a revised package combining all the thousands family and contains three sets:
--- Thousands: 81 number cards, 18 WAR cards and DIRECTIONS
--- Ten Thousands: 81 number cards, 18 WAR cards and DIRECTIONS
--- Hundred Thousands: 81 number cards, 18 WAR cards and DIRECTIONS
This game is based on the old card game of WAR with a twist. It helps students learn PLACE VALUE. Although there are 81 cards in each set, you can choose to play with half the pack to start with, i.e., you could play with the cards 1,000 to 5,000.
In my intervention sessions I start with half the pack and nine WAR cards until my students get the swing of the game, then I increase the cards when they are quicker. At first they need time to compare numbers and work out which one is the largest. They love doing this to see who has won, so the motivation is high and they get lots of practice. That's just what they need and they learn quickly.
Once you have kids who know how to play it, add it to a Maths Centre and have your intervention group show others how to play. It's great practice and perfect for consolidation (and self-esteem).
I find my 9-11 year old boys love it and I think it's the name, but I have girls who like it as well, so if you're looking for an activity to consolidate place value in the thousands, this could be what you are looking for. The PREVIEW will give you some idea of the cards included.
