{ Plate Tectonics Continental Drift Theory Sea floor Spreading Plate Interactions and Boundaries Earthquakes and Volcanoes }

This is a fabulous unit designed for Middle School on Plate Tectonics Theory. It is designed around the inquiry question, 'How is Earth dynamic?' The unit begins building understanding around the layers of the Earth, explores continental drift theory and the evidence for the theory as well as the lack of evidence for the theory. Students play scientist as they collect the evidence to provide direct evidence for plate movement. The unit moves into Harry Hess and sea floor spreading where students draw a profile of the Atlantic Ocean floor and measure the sea floor spreading for the last 155 000 000 million years. There are two different labs for demonstrating convection currents. The unit then moves into plate boundaries, faulting in bedrock and earthquake activity. The last topic examined is volcanic ranges where students draw profiles of the three types of volcanoes and analyze the relationship between silica and water vapor content and type of eruption produced. The unit includes all notes done in Cornell format. There are two tests, a reading check and summary exercises and a concluding activity for the inquiry question. All activities include answer keys.
