In this booklet you will find a platform to teach figurative language in poetry, -Simile, metaphor, onomatopoeia, personification and hyperbole- based on open ended questions and focused on higher level thinking skills. It tackles de Common Core Standards and also TEKS from Texas.
The method of teaching and organization flows from simple to complex, having the gradual release principle in mind, and is methodic in its goal of understanding and using figurative language.
• Each section starts with a driving question that serves to assess the student’s previous knowledge - Pre-assessment
• Mini lesson with definition, examples, illustrations and a optional power point.
• Practice with short examples to teach the concept clearly and moves on into harder vocabulary and content - Formative assessment
• Finally, students independently create their own poems that will be part of their poetry portfolio. The students can choose from several activities according to their preferences and learning styles.
Henceforth, students will not only understand and analyze poetry, but they will create their own, integrating the content that they have learned in an independent, natural form.
We deeply believe that knowledge is to be approached with a holistic approach, therefore we have integrated technology, science, and social studies content into this project, in order to enhance the connections needed for a deep understanding of figurative language and how it applies to other fields of knowledge and real life experiences.
It can be used for the whole class instruction or as a station.
All the activities have proven to be effective in the classroom.
