You will be analyzing 4 poems, 2 that are assigned to you and 2 of your own choosing. At your computer, go to: www.loc.gov/poetry/180/ This is a NEW collection of poems for high school students. From this website, select 2 poems that you like. You will analyze them according to the criteria listed below. These poems may be of your choosing, but they MUST:
Be 14 lines or longer
Be at or above your reading level (challenge yourself!)
You MUST include copies of the poems you’ve selected with your project.
Write a two paragraph analysis of each poem. This means that you will be submitting ten paragraphs in total.
In the first paragraph, summarize what the poem is about/describing. This paragraph must contain title of poem (in quotation marks) and the poet.
In the second paragraph, state the theme of the poem and SHOW how the poet gets that theme across through analyzing his ideas stanza-by-stanza (or unit of meaning by unit of meaning). You will also discuss how the similes or metaphors or examples of personification or sound/rhythm add to the theme.
(4 x 15 pts. = 60 pts.)
Your grade for this part of the project will be based on thoroughness and evidence that you made a solid effort to analyze the poetry.
Select TWO of the poems and FOR EACH poem, write ONE PAGE on how the theme of the poem is found in a different piece of literature that you read in high school. Ex. The theme of jealousy that is developed in my poem “…..” is the very same theme that is found in Knowles’ A Separate Peace. You will be discussing how the poem and the book are similar or different in the treatment of that theme. THIS MUST BE ONE FULL PAGE – with examples and techniques!
Total: 2 pages. (2 x 15 pts. = 30 pts.)
Make a 8 ½ “ x 11” collage of ONE of your poems OR a
computer graphic collage OR an original drawing OR
write your own original creative poem on a subject
or theme of your choice. (10 pts.)
