Poetry analysis and writing are two of the most difficult and elusive areas to teach. But there is method to the madness. I’ve found a method that works, and you don’t have to be a passionate poet to pull it off.
If you are a good listener, if you keep asking questions, if you show you value students’ comments and insights, this analysis and writing technique will be student driven and a great success!
Use this over and over to analyze and write poetry at any age or ability level (strongest recommendation for 4th through 8th grades). We can use this analysis technique with any poem. The poetry writing method can be used with any photo or fine art example as well, but I’ve included poetry, photos, and fine art here so you don’t have to go looking.
This download is not just a framework for student responses and writing but a pedagogical technique as well—a useful tool as well as a mini in-service on teaching poetry writing and analysis.
